Missions and Outreach

Local Missions:

Solebury United Methodist Children's Learning Center is a fully licensed, private, not-for-profit school for children 3 to 5 years of age. The Learning Center is a Christian-based Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten with morning and new afternoon classes and extended hours. The Early Three-Year Old Program, for children who will be three by January 1, has classes on Tuesdays/Thursdays and Wednesdays/Fridays.

Lambertville Food Pantry sponsored by the Delaware Valley Interfaith Council (DVIC), an association of faith communities, has been providing food and household consumable items free-of-charge for more than 25 years. It services nearly 1,000 eligible local residents each month. SUMC's Vic Lance serves as the Director of the Food Pantry supported by many members of the congregation who help unload trucks, stock shelves and gather supplies usually the last Wednesday morning of each month.

Aid for Friends is a charitable non-profit organization that provides free home-cooked dinners weekly, friendly visits and supplemental outreach services to more than 2100 isolated, needy shut-ins, primarily the frail elderly, in the five-county Greater Philadelphia area. The first Sunday of each month, SUMC volunteers gather to assemble more than 100 meals. The meals are frozen and delivered to Aid for Friends headquarters in Philadelphia by SUMC volunteers. Meals are also provided to members of SUMC who are in need.

Vacation Bible School offers SUMC the opportunity to provide children in the community fun-filled evenings of music, arts and crafts, games, hands-on mission projects and Bible stories. A closing picnic brings family members and children together.

Parents Night Out is a program offered periodically throughout the year free-of-charge with the goal of providing parents an evening out - to spend some time together, go to dinner, see a movie or shop, while their children are in a safe environment enjoying games, pizza and movies. Children three to 10 years of age are welcome and encouraged to bring their favorite pillow and blanket for the movie.

Annual Ham Suppers. SUMC holds two family style ham suppers each year-Spring and Fall. This is a great time for fellowship as the dinner is prepared and served by church members and is viewed as an important outreach to our local community.

Annual "Spaghetti Our Way" Dinner. In 2006, we expanded our outreach into our local community, and provide more fellowship for SUMC participants and to play to our strengths coming from the hugely successful ham suppers. To that end, "Spaghetti Our Way" was born. Coming off a very successful dinner, we are planning at least one dinner a year.

Annual Flea Market and Bake Sale is held in early summer. SUMC family and friends donate their gently used but in good shape items to find new homes. This too is a great opportunity to fellowship while pricing, setting up, selling and cleaning up. It also provides us the opportunity to reach out to our community and provide information on our church and all its activities.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt is a community-wide event for children held at SUMC in conjunction with our Children's Learning Center. The Egg Hunt is now part of our fun-filled Creative Christian Kid's program for the month.

CROP Walk, held each October, to raise awareness of and funds for world hunger relief. SUMC members and friends walk the six-and-a-half mile loop between Lambertville, NJ and Titusville, NJ. Twenty-five percent of what is collected goes to the DVIC's Lambertville Food Pantry.

Interfaith Housing Network (IHN) of Hunterdon County provides an opportunity for SUMC to participate several times a year in a ministry that provides help to the homeless in our area by providing food and shelter to families on a two-week rotation at the First Presbyterian Church of Lambertville as part of a three-month long intensive case management program in regard to housing, employment, child care, transportation and additional advocacy needed to help each client gain financial independence.

Warm Up America! is an organization that provides afghans to those in need-folks who have lost their homes, fled abusive relationships, and/or are cared for in hospices, shelters, hospitals and nursing homes. The Ruth Circle sponsors this program and has a number of volunteers making afghans throughout the year.

NGA (formerly known as the Needlework Guild of America) ) is a 120 year old organization that reaches out and touches the lives of old and young, physically and mentally impaired and the homeless and institutionalized regardless of gender, race or religion. During the "Fall Ingathering" new clothing, linens and toiletries are collected, separated and distributed to local agencies to distribute to their clients including the Salvation Army, Bethanna Home, Bucks County agencies for children and adults and the homeless. SUMC participates through the New Hope/Solebury Chapter.

National/International Missions:

Annual Mission Trip. For the past seven years, SUMC youth, friends and adults have participated in a mission outreach program to rehabilitate homes for disadvantaged families. In 2008, Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio is our destination during the week of July 6th.

World Vision Adopt a Child Program is a new ministry the Ruth Circle is supporting. World Vision is a Christian humanitarian organization dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice.

Fair Trade Coffee Ministry offers coffees, teas and chocolates for sale that promote justice for those at the bottom of the economic ladder--the growers! SUMC currently offers coffee, teas, cocoa mix and chocolate bars for sale in the Church foyer.

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). SUMC supports UMCOR's humanitarian relief activities globally through our One Great Hour of Sharing offerings and other requests for assistance for people who are affected by storms or war, disaster or disease. We contributed flood buckets and health kits for disaster relief work for hurricane victims in the US. In addition, we provided assistance for our local neighbors who suffered from the back-to-back Delaware River floodings.

UMC Connectional Ministries: mission funds given from SUMC to the larger church that includes the mission of the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference and the United Methodist Church worldwide. These funds help support the administrative function of the church, church camps, colleges and seminaries and pastors and missionaries serving in areas where supplemental salary support is necessary.

Jamaica Mission: This initiative helps provide new school supplies to the poorest children of St. Ann's Province near Ocho Rios, Jamaica through a partnership with the Ocho Rios New Testament Church. In Jamaica, families must provide all school supplies for their children to attend school. For many impoverished families, school supplies are a luxury they cannot possible afford. SUMC donates and ships crayons, pens, pencils, glue, scissors, colored pencils and markers, coloring books, lightweight children's books, stamps and stickers to the Church, where they are personally delivered to the needy school children of the Province.

Our Missionary Partners:

Denny and Dolly Bowerman (World Gospel Mission) who serve among the Navajos in Arizona
