Our Heritage
Solebury United Methodist Church traces its earliest roots to the year 1818 when an interdenominational
Sunday school was founded in New Hope by Reverend Thomas Dunn and laywoman Rebecca Ingham, to teach literacy
skills and the Bible to poor children. The school became the spiritual foundation for several area congregations.
In 1872, the school erected a chapel in New Hope for the program that in 1893 was chartered as the
New Hope Presbyterian Church. That congregation served the community until 1970 when it merged with the
New Hope United Methodist Church. Its former building is now occupied by the New Hope Free Library.
Early Methodist circuit riding preachers organized the first societies in the area in the 1820s and
1830s near Lumberville among the Bissey and Eisenbrey families who became the nucleus of the Lumberville United
Methodist Church. A first house of worship was built in 1836 on the river side of River Road and a second house of
worship was built in 1869 across the street. In 1992, the Lumberville United Methodist Church merged with the New Hope
United Methodist Church congregation downriver forming the New Hope-Lumberville United Methodist Church.
In 1830, a Methodist society was formed in the home of New Hope residents Samuel and Mary Sutton. A simple meeting
house was constructed on Mechanic Street in 1837. In 1874, a large stone church was constructed on Main Street
where our congregation worshiped until 1999. That year, we broke ground for the first of three proposed buildings on our
present site. Our current facility was completed and dedicated in February 2000 and we changed our name to Solebury United
Methodist Church. We hope to begin construction of Phase 2, the permanent sanctuary, in the near future.
The Solebury United Methodist Church enjoys a heritage of Christian witness and community service extending back more than
180 years. We invited you to join with us as we seek to serve Christ and the people of the New Hope-Solebury area for many
years to come.
